Lowood Plant Nursery

There has been a nursery here, at the heart of the beautiful Lowood Estate on the banks of the river Tweed for many years.

It was reopened by Barry & Holly in May ’08. On the doorstep of Melrose, Tweedbank, Darnick, Gattonside and just a couple of miles from Galashiels, follow a lovely country lane lined with mature trees and a beautiful stone dyke for less than a mile, watching out for badgers, deer and Galloway belted cattle, and you’ll find yourself in a world apart, alive with the sound of birds !!

Over the past year, we have been stocking the nursery with over 500 varieties of plants to include alpines, perennials, shrubs, fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, climbers, hedging, ornamental trees, conservatory plants, planted bulbs, hanging baskets, seeds and a range of in-season bedding, We make our own compost to ensure that everything grows strong, healthy and suited to the Borders. Our aim is to provide an interesting range of varieties from brand new to golden oldies at a reasonable price.

We are lucky to have a couple of large traditional cedar greenhouses at the nursery, one of which we dedicate to growing ‘hydroponic’ fruit, vegetables and herbs. This is an excellent ‘no waste’ system of growing, being made full use of in Australia these days to safeguard against the effects of climate change and you’ll be welcome to look round and learn about it when you come down.

We are always happy to help and advise and, where possible, will do our best to source plants for you that we don’t have in stock at the time. We also offer a Garden Design and Planting Service.

We’re open all year until Christmas when we sell Holly or Fir Wreaths and Christmas Trees. Please check our Opening Hours for different times of year and feel free to call or e.mail us should you need to arrange a visit out with those times..
